A Brief History of Youth Festivals
The World Festival of Youth and Students has been held irregularly since 1947. For the first time it was held in the capital of Czechoslovakia, Prague. The event is organized by the World Federation of Democratic Youth and the International Union of Students. In the middle of the 20th century, the festival was held under the slogan “For peace and friendship!”, Subsequently – “For anti-imperialist solidarity, peace and friendship!” Since 2001, each subsequent festival has had its own slogan.
The event was held twice in the USSR – in 1957 and 1985. Both times – in Moscow. The Moscow festival of 1957 became the largest in the history of the festival movement: 34 thousand people from 131 countries took part in it.
The last, 19th festival was held in October 2017 in Sochi. The slogan of the festival is “For peace, solidarity and social justice, we fight against imperialism – by respecting our past, we are building our future!”
How the 2024 festival was prepared
In April 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on holding the World Youth Festival in 2024 “for the purpose of developing international youth cooperation.” The federal territory “Sirius” was chosen as the venue.
The organizing committee, in particular, included: Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Sergei Kiriyenko, Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova, Head of Sberbank German Gref, Chief Editor of RT Margarita Simonyan, Rector of Moscow State University Viktor Sadovnichy, General Director of Channel One Konstantin Ernst, Head of the Ministry of Digital Development Maksut Shadayev.
The festival is expected to host 20 thousand Russian and foreign young leaders in various spheres of public life: from business and media, to culture, science and sports. During the days of the event, Sochi Airport is preparing to receive more than 300 thousand passengers.
Festival program
A special space will be created in the Olympic Park, located on the territory of Sirius: “City of Youth of the World”. Its center will be Medal Square, which for the duration of the event will be called “Soul of Russia”. The campuses of major Russian cities will be located there. There are five pavilions in total: Belgorod, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug and Kazan. They will host educational and cultural events.
Guests will be able to get to the “City of Youth of the World” through the Sirius University – it will be styled as the “WFM International Airport”, and “boarding passes” will be issued at the check-in counters. The total area of the “air harbor” with 112 exhibitions will be 25 thousand square meters. m, a model of the Russian MS-21 aircraft will also be presented there.
Guests will be able to take part in master classes, discussions, panel sessions and training sessions, and see performances by the best creative teams. Concerts and talk shows will be organized for the evening program.
