WHO: the situation with coronavirus in Russia is not alarming

The situation with coronavirus infection in the Russian Federation is not alarming. Currently, there is a decrease in the incidence. This was announced on Thursday, March 23, by the official representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Russia, Melita Vujnovic.

She added that she fully supports the assessments given by Rospotrebnadzor, because she sees how the department is monitoring the situation: the Russian representative office of WHO receives daily figures from it.

“Of course, now testing is also decreasing, this is normal,” Vujnovic emphasized on the sidelines of the Healthy Life Forum. – Even from the population that is being tested (morbidity – approx. ed.), is at a certain level, does not go over a high indicator. So there is no anxiety at this point… The situation is developing well.” The expert added that this should not relax. The WHO sees a general decline in incidence over the past two years. “Although there are races in certain countries, there are none like we have seen in the last two years,” Vujnovic explained. “All the conditions are in place so that we can expect the end of the international emergency.”

The expert noted that WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expects this: in 2023 there are reasons for this, but you should not relax because the coronavirus is constantly changing. “Yes, we see that even Omicron and all new strains do not give such high numbers of disease, severe diseases,” Vujnovich noted. — But you have to be careful… Our situation is at a good crossroads. We will be watching closely. Yes, there is optimism, but we must not relax.”

The official representative of the WHO in Russia expressed the hope that COVID-19 will not cause such serious bursts of incidence in the future as in previous years, although it “will not go anywhere.” “We hope that immunity and its properties and characteristics will be such that they will not cause such huge jumps in morbidity to overload the healthcare system,” she stressed.
