Over the past decade, Russia has made significant progress in the fight against smoking, which has led to a reduction in the consumption of tobacco products. According to the press service of the European Bureau of the World Health Organization (WHO), the percentage of smokers decreased from 39.4% in 2009 to 30.9% in 2016.
As RIA Novosti clarifies, these successes were achieved thanks to the adoption of decisive and comprehensive measures to combat tobacco. Such measures include a 100% smoke-free policy in public places, an increase in tobacco taxes, and a complete ban on advertising for the sale of tobacco products. In addition, a ban was introduced on the sale of tobacco to minors.
According to WHO, the current consumption of tobacco products in the Russian Federation continues to decline, which is an important indicator of progress in this area. From 2009 to 2016, the percentage of smokers in the population has decreased, and tobacco consumption among adolescents aged 13 to 15 has also significantly decreased – from 27.3% in 2004 to 12.1% in 2021.
