The trident can warp the whole composition
From the statue “Motherland” in Kyiv, which will now be called “Mother Ukraine”, they began to cut off the coat of arms of the USSR. The ears were removed first. On social networks, they are ironic that this symbolizes the end of the grain deal. But it is clear that it is simply difficult for Ukrainians to remove the entire coat of arms at once – it is not so easy to destroy what was built by their ancestors for centuries.
“Motherland” is the largest monument in Ukraine and the fifth largest statue in the world. On the right bank of the Dnieper, it was erected already at the end of the USSR – in 1981. The stainless steel sculpture, 62 meters high (with a pedestal – all 102), was assembled in separate sections of 25-30 tons. The metal from which the monument is made was smelted in Zaporozhye. The blocks were welded together by specialists from the Paton Electric Welding Institute.

To demolish the “Motherland” back in 2015 was proposed by the chief architect of Kyiv Sergey Tselovalnik. Then, according to him, 145 monuments fell under “decommunization” in the Ukrainian capital. Including the famous creation of Yevgeny Vuchetich (he died in the process of preparing the project, the Ukrainian sculptor Yevgeny Boroday was finishing the work).
The monument in Kyiv was attacked, among other things, because it was built according to the design of the same sculptor who created the famous “Motherland” in Volgograd – on Mamaev Kurgan. Moreover, Ukrainian sculpture is simpler, and her sword is shorter. However, even such a “simplified model” turned out to be technically difficult to demolish.
And the metal texture of the monument turned out to be very convenient for “dressing up”: during Eurovision 2017, with the help of illumination of the “Motherland”, they “dressed up” either in dresses of the colors of the Ukrainian flag, or in the colors of the flags of the countries participating in the festival.
Kiev put up with the sculpture itself, but decided to remove the Soviet coat of arms: even though this element is an important part of balancing the entire composition, and when it is cut, the monument can simply skew. Even the process of cutting the coat of arms is laborious and financially costly. In order to remove the multi-ton coat of arms and replace it with a trident, the former Minister of Culture Tkachenko demanded an amount of 36 million hryvnias (about 984 thousand dollars). 28 million hryvnias ($765,000) were allocated for the creation of the trident. Interested Ukrainian oligarchs threw themselves on him. The owner of Metinvest, Rinat Akhmetov, took on a certain part of the expenses.
However, as it turned out during the creation of the trident, during the time of independence, Ukraine forgot how to make even normal steel. The same Zaporizhstal, which cast the details of the structure for more than forty years ago, now failed to cope with the task. In any case, the creators of the new coat of arms demanded foreign steel – more expensive. According to them, “the steel provided by the plant has different thicknesses, which can change the weight of the entire structure. In addition, the material from the mill had a significant amount of damage, which would complicate and slow down the preparatory work.” So, according to Ukrainian tradition, the cost of the project has risen sharply.
The question is why, in the midst of a military campaign, when there are not enough funds for uniforms and food for soldiers, it is not worth spending millions of dollars to replace the coat of arms for the Ukrainian authorities. This country lives not by action, but by symbols.
