The World Health Organization has decided to rename the monkeypox strains. Previous versions of the names were considered discriminatory for African countries. In addition, the monkeypox virus itself will be renamed at the request of scientists. This was announced by WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
The strains are now called “clade one” (the variant that comes from the Congo Basin) and “clade two” (the West African strain). At the same time, it was decided to divide “I put two” into two subspecies.
Recall that the outbreak of monkeypox is recognized as an emergency of international concern. At the same time, WHO considers that for all regions except Europe, the risk of the spread of the disease is moderate.
Monkeypox is a viral infection that can be transmitted from person to person. Usually the disease is mild. Patients recover within a few weeks. However, complications of the disease are possible. There have already been deaths.
