Our idea of age changes over time. In the 19th century, girls got married at the age of 15-17, a hundred years later a person was considered mature at 30, and old age began at 50. Today, the age of 45–65 years is felt by many as the most high-quality and happy period in life. It combines health, strength, experience and wisdom. On the International Youth Day, which is celebrated on August 12, Daria Krut, a specialist of the Moscow Psychological Assistance Service, gave practical recommendations on how to maintain good spirits and stay young as long as possible.

Physical age may not coincide with how each of us feels. Everyone knows the examples of women and men who look amazing at 40-50, despite the wrinkles around the eyes, and 18-year-old boys and girls who live and talk as if all the most joyful and interesting things in their lives have already happened. What allows some to keep their “young” appearance, while others “age” prematurely?

Experience shows that Muscovites of different ages face difficulties in accepting themselves. Since the beginning of the year, specialists from the Moscow Psychological Assistance Service have conducted about 700 trainings and more than 46,000 consultations for residents of the capital aged 14 to 35. Residents of the capital have changed their attitude to their well-being, have stopped postponing the appeal to psychologists and are actively engaged in mental health.

“Youth is characterized by activity, enthusiasm, play, search and constant renewal. Therefore, people who are ready to change and learn something new every time, to be playful and spontaneous, regardless of their real age, are perceived as young. But not everyone is ready to change. Having once reached a certain position and stability, a person begins to be afraid of changes, it becomes scary for him to start another business, relationship, move to a new place, even if the former way of life ceases to bring satisfaction. Trying to defend himself, refusing new experience and postponing important decisions for an indefinite period, a person stops in his development, becomes ossified – this is old age, ” thinks Daria Krut.

On International Youth Day, it will not be out of place to remember the Mark Twain quote: “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether they are twenty or eighty. Anyone who continues to learn remains young. The best thing you can do is keep your mind young.” His advice is still relevant today. Here are some more important tips to help you stay young in mind and body:

  • Lead an active lifestyle: physical activity helps to prolong the natural youth of the body, and yoga, qigong or dancing will be the key to a beautiful and correct posture.
  • Monitor your health and sleep quality: adhere to a proper and balanced diet, observe the daily routine, walk in the fresh air. Give up bad habits!
  • Constantly learning something new: the positive emotions that we experience doing something for the first time stimulate the creation of new neural connections and contribute to the preservation of youth.
  • Get creative: fun and creative activities help us open up, gain confidence, become more spontaneous, light, optimistic and open to the world.
  • Joke and do what pleases you: a sincere smile and a happy look give rise to natural attractiveness. By practicing what makes us feel truly happy, we preserve the beauty of youth.
  • Maintain a zest for life: set goals, communicate, visit new places, share your impressions with others with enthusiasm and enthusiasm, keep a good mood.

And don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. “Try yourself in a new role: today there are many opportunities related to education, choosing a profession, building partnerships, creating a family, personal development. Experiment and learn to see beauty nearby.

In the Moscow Psychological Assistance Service, five psychological consultations, two sessions of psychological diagnostics, three trainings and eight sessions of psychological rehabilitation can be completed within a calendar year. Free psychological assistance can be received not only by Muscovites, but also by residents of the Moscow Region working in the capital, students, military personnel.
