WHO calls loneliness a threat to global health

Chido Mpemba and Vivek Murthy, co-chairs of the World Health Organization’s Social Affairs Commission, said loneliness can cause harm comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

The commission will study the effects of loneliness and social isolation, theguardian.com reports.

US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said a quarter of older adults across all regions face social isolation. Contrary to popular belief, loneliness is not “a problem in developed countries,” Murthy said.
