white shark jumped out of the water behind a surfer during a competition

Photographer Jordan Anast captured the incredible moment when a great white shark jumped out of the water during a surf competition. In the picture, Anast captured local surfboard manufacturer Tyler Warren surfing the bright blue waves with a huge shark taking off behind him. In a series of photographs that seem almost unreal, the shark can be seen as it returns to the water, taking on the shape of a crescent moon.
The surfer reportedly later told Anast that he had no idea the shark had come from behind.
Jordan Anast, photographer: “I’ve captured a few memorable moments over the decades, but this one is special to me. I thought: “This is a big dolphin”, it just looks like “Sharknado”, this is unreal,” he wrote on his personal page in one of the social networks.
Matt Enright, surf club member: “There have been many cases over the years. We saw sharks, but no one was really worried,” he told the Orange County Register.
Enright himself saw two young sharks about two meters away from him the next day and said that “several people nearby were rowing towards the shore like crazy”:
“I was so excited to see the fins, I had never seen this before,” he told the publication.
San Onofre is a famous breeding ground for great white sharks. It’s not the first time a shark has come this close in the area in the last few years.
In 2019, a shark appeared above the water during a U.S. surf event at the Lower Flyover, north of San Onofre. In 2021, during the WSL final, a shark jumped out of the water, causing the competition to be suspended.
Scientists have hypothesized that young sharks practice this way in chasing prey.
