Vladimir Zherebenkov, a lawyer for the American Paul Whelan, who was convicted in Russia for espionage, denied the information that his client complained about the conditions in prison.
Earlier, Whelan’s brother David said that the prisoner complained about the conditions of detention and the prison staff, who allegedly took warm clothes from him and soiled clean clothes. He called for an investigation and for the safety of his brother.
Foal noted that he knew nothing about Whelan’s complaints.
“You have to understand the fact that the Americans always escalate. Plus, perhaps there was a misunderstanding when translating from one language to another,” he said. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
Zherebenkov also noted that during his visit to Whelan, he did not notice a negative attitude towards him in prison, and the convict did not express any complaints.
Paul Whelan was detained in Moscow on December 28, 2018 while carrying out a spy operation. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison and is serving his sentence in Mordovia.
