Soviet and American artist Ilya Kabakov passed away at the age of 89, the Mash Telegram channel reported.
Kabakov became one of the founders of Moscow conceptualism and the ancestor of the genre of total installations. He is a foreign honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts. In the late 1980s, he emigrated to the United States, where he did all his projects in collaboration with his wife, Emilia Kabakova.
His works were among the most expensive in the history of modern Russian painting. For example, the works Luxe Room (2006) and Beetle (2008) were sold at the Phillips de Pury auction in London for a record $4.1 million and $5.84 million respectively for contemporary Russian art.
In total, Kabakov devoted 30 years of his life to illustrating, during which time he designed about 150 children’s books. In the same years, he created his own graphic series, one of the most famous and high-quality works – a series of albums “Ten Characters”. He spent the last years of his life in New York.
