Vedomosti: the Presidential Administration did not support an increase in military service to two years

The presidential administration and the Ministry of Defense did not support the proposal of some senators and deputies to increase the period of compulsory military service to two years. The authorities decided to focus on qualitative rather than quantitative training of the military. The newspaper reported Vedomosti with reference to sources.
According to the newspaper, the Kremlin took into account the position of the parliamentarians who opposed this initiative. The head of the Committee on Constitutional Legislation Andrey Klishas also told the publication that, in his opinion, the increase in the service life will not increase the combat effectiveness of the Russian military. At the same time, Mr. Klishas explained that the final decision on this issue would remain with the Ministry of Defense.
On November 1, the autumn conscription began in Russia. Since 2008, the term of military service has been one year. In October, Senator Vladimir Dzhabarov proposed extending the period of compulsory service to two years, later supported State Duma Deputy Mikhail Sheremet. In the Kremlin spokethat did not discuss this issue. Head of the State Duma Defense Committee Andrey Kartapolov informedthat now there are no bills to increase the service life.
