Four desert systems of Turkmenistan are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This was reported by the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We are talking about “Bereketli Garagum”, “Gaplangyr”, “Repetek” and “Eraji”. The decision was announced at the 45th session of the World Heritage Committee, which was held in Riyadh.
The most famous desert of these is “Bereketli Garagum” – Karakum. Turkmenistan submitted the application jointly with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. So the nomination in which the objects were included in the list is called “Cold winter deserts of Turan”.
The main purpose of including ecosystems in the list is to preserve unique species of plants and animals that are on the verge of extinction. Countries will have to make efforts together.
