Fyodor Konyukhov, a Russian traveler, writer and artist, plans to make a historic journey – to sail across the Pacific Ocean on a catamaran that runs on solar energy. He published information about this on his website.
As part of the Nova project, planned for 2023, Fedor Konyukhov intends to make a solo passage across the Pacific Ocean on an 11-meter ocean-class catamaran equipped with electric motors and solar modules.
The expedition will be divided into two stages. At the first stage, Konyukhov will cover the path from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean islands across the Atlantic Ocean. In the second stage, he plans to go from Chile to Australia across the Pacific Ocean. During the trip, Fedor Konyukhov will keep a video diary and carry out environmental monitoring of the ocean, recording the presence or absence of plastic waste in sea water every day. The collected data will be analyzed after the expedition is completed.
Particular attention will be paid to studying the pollution of the world’s oceans with microplastics. The catamaran will be equipped with special filters that can capture plastic particles ranging in size from 200 microns to 1.5 mm or more. Fedor Konyukhov will service the filters, package and label the collected samples indicating the location coordinates, collection time and filtered water meter readings.
This research will assess the extent of microplastic pollution in the South Pacific and study its distribution routes using mathematical modeling.
Fedor Konyukhov holds the absolute world record in the field of aeronautics – the fastest flight around the world in a hot air balloon. For this achievement, he was awarded the title of “Pilot of the Year” by the International Aeronautics Federation (FAI) in 2016. Together with Alexey Menyailo, Konyukhov also set two world records during training for a round-the-world flight: the first was a flight lasting 32 hours, and the second was a non-stop flight in a hot-air balloon lasting 55 hours.
