American newspaper The Wall Street Journal reported that a “huge threat” is the demographic crisis that has arisen in Ukraine.
According to the authors of the publication, the birth rate may break the world anti-record. According to pessimistic developments, the population of Ukraine may fall below 30 million people.
It is clarified that in the first half of this year the number of births was 28% lower than in the same period before the conflict. This is the sharpest decline since Ukraine gained independence in 1991.
According to the forecasts of Ukrainian demographers, the birth rate in the country was already one of the lowest in Europe. Now it may become one of the lowest in the world.
“This is a huge threat. At the moment, the important question remains how people will behave after the cessation of hostilities, whether they will return to the territory of Ukraine. In the worst case, in the next two decades the country’s population will fall below 30 million,” noted Alexander Gladun, a specialist from the Institute of Demography and Social Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
