The airline’s press service reported that three planes that were supposed to arrive in Sochi and were forced to be redirected to alternate airfields due to strong winds returned to the resort airport. According to the airline, flights from the Olympic capital will begin soon.
Earlier it was reported that due to increased winds, 14 aircraft flying to Sochi were redirected to alternate airfields, and the airport began to operate depending on weather conditions. Later, in the official Telegram channel of the Federal Air Transport Agency, it was noted that the number of redirected aircraft increased to 16, and they landed at alternate airfields in Vladikavkaz, Mineralnye Vody and Grozny.
The first plane, which was redirected to the alternate Mineralnye Vody airport, returned to Sochi from Thailand on Tuesday night. According to airport officials, the crew managed to take advantage of a favorable weather window to land in the Olympic capital.
“Already the third plane has successfully landed in Sochi after returning from an alternate airfield, and flights continue to arrive in the city. An improved weather forecast means that flights from Sochi will soon begin,” the Sochi Airport Telegram channel said.
Some passengers of the delayed flights had to wait for departure from St. Petersburg from Monday 13:00 Moscow time, and those who spent a long time at the alternate airport in Grozny were accommodated in hotels until Tuesday, RIA Novosti reported.
