The results of the winter route registration of animals were summed up by the specialists of the Losiny Ostrov National Park.
From December 2022 to March 2023, employees kept a record of the inhabitants of the park, marking on special cards the types of animals whose traces were found in the snow. According to the press service of the Losiny Ostrov National Park, each time the count was carried out within two days. In the first, the accountants wiped out all the animal tracks on their route, and in the second, they noted fresh tracks.
“On the second day of counting tracks, while walking along the route, the accountant marks on the route map the daily tracks that cross the route, and the species of animals that left these tracks,” the report explains.
According to the results of winter monitoring, it turned out that the number of spotted deer in the park has increased significantly. If last time they counted about 180, then this year – already 220. In addition, the number of squirrels in Losiny Island has almost doubled – experts recorded 258 individuals of these fluffy animals.
The number of moose has remained unchanged – there are just over 40 of them in the park. The number of hare and foxes living in Elk Island has practically not changed. The number of wild boars has slightly decreased – from 60 to 50 individuals. However, experts noted that such fluctuations in numbers are within the normal range.
