The veterinarian called the diseases that pets can infect their owners

Veterinarian Mikhail Shelyakov warned in an interview with “Gazeta.Ru”that pets can bring diseases into the home that are transmitted to humans. Among them are not only diseases from which animals suffer themselves, but also those that are dangerous only for their owners.

“As a rule, we are talking about acute and especially dangerous infectious diseases: rabies, anthrax or leptospirosis. All of them can be transmitted from animals to humans,” the expert noted. At the same time, he recalled that the same leptospirosis can be obtained by simply swimming in a pond where an infected cat or dog had previously visited.

Do not forget about ticks that spread borreliosis or Lyme disease, which can “arrive” into the house on the skin of an animal. These diseases, if left untreated, can lead to disability. In the same way, pets can bring human coronavirus to the owner. “If a person with covid sneezes on your dog in the park, and you stroke it and wipe your nose, there will also be a chance of getting infected,” the doctor reminds.

There is also a whole group of diseases that are especially dangerous for expectant mothers: parasitic toxoplasmosis, listeriosis, campylobacteriosis. All of them can cause abortization and fetal defects, Mikhail Shelyakov warns.
