State Duma deputies adopted in the first reading bill about changing the limits of military age. The bill provides for a sharp increase in the upper limit of the draft age (if the document is adopted, people up to 30 years of age will be drafted as early as 2024), while the lower bar will be raised gradually.
The bill provides for a transitional period for changing the draft age, which will last until 2026. Due to the fact that the lower limit of the draft age will be raised gradually, in 2024 men aged 19 to 30 will be subject to conscription, in 2025 – from 20 to 30 years, in 2026 – from 21 to 30 years.
On December 21, 2022, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu proposed changing the limits of the military age. At the same time, the minister announced the need to increase the size of the Russian armed forces to 1.5 million people (about 700 thousand will be contract soldiers).
