The State Duma announced the need to extend military service to two years

State Duma deputy and member of the Defense Committee Viktor Sobolev (Communist Party of the Russian Federation) called for increasing the period of military service in the Russian army to two years, the publication reported News.ru. Earlier, deputy Andrei Gurulev (United Russia) made a similar initiative.
“The issue of increasing the length of service in the army has been brewing for a long time. Soldiers must serve for at least a year and a half, of which the first six months must be trained in training units. And for the next year, or better yet, a year and a half, be directly in the troops. Then our troops will be truly combat-ready,” said Viktor Sobolev.
The deputy emphasized that the final decision rests with Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to Mr. Sobolev, no one will be against this decision if it helps protect the country’s sovereignty.
“Modern technology requires that a military man be trained to be able to apply knowledge in practice, this takes time. It is necessary to carry out combat coordination so that any company or battalion is ready to defend its homeland at any time. And commanders, which is also very important, must learn to manage units and organize interaction between them,” said Mr. Sobolev.
Earlier, the proposal to extend the term of military service was expressed by State Duma deputy Andrei Gurulev in his Telegram-channel. In his opinion, increasing the service life will allow for high-quality training of fighters, as well as achieving the required number of contingents. “A year of service does not produce a trained soldier; various deepening and expanding programs will not help,” said Mr. Gurulev.
December 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decree increasing the size of the army by 170 thousand people. The total staff of the armed forces will now be 2,209,130 people, of which 1,320,000 are military personnel. The decree of December 1 comes into force from the date of its signing. The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that it will increase the staff gradually, at the expense of contract soldiers; mobilization in connection with the decree is not planned.
