On February 17, the 21st ski relay race was held in Penza in memory of Captain of Justice Dmitry Shornikov. Every year this competition brings together about 200 people: schoolchildren, athletes, and employees of the regional FSB.
At the age of 25, Dmitry Shornikov investigated drug and weapons smuggling, dealt with criminal cases related to terrorism, was a good shooter and was fond of skiing.
In 2000, he was sent to a counter-terrorism operation in the North Caucasus. There his unit was ambushed by militants. Dmitry Shornikov, even with a serious wound, continued to cover his comrades and fire back. Unfortunately, he was awarded the Order of Courage posthumously. His name was given to his native school and street in Penza.
“Our duty is to remember our fellow countrymen who, at a difficult moment for the country, stood up to defend the Motherland,” Oleg Melnichenko’s telegram channel summed up today’s relay race.
