Aging is a process of accumulation of mutations in the body, but in centenarians, these mutations do not affect important parts of the genome. About such a specific feature “Gazete.Ru” said the leading researcher at the Vavilov Institute of General Genetics, geneticist Konstantin Krutovsky.
The oldest genome that has been studied was that of Hendricke van Andel-Schipper – a woman who lived for 115 years and bequeathed her body to science. “450 mutations were found in her leukocytes, but none of them was fatal,” said the professor at the Department of Genomics and Bioinformatics of SibFU. “The telomeres were also significantly shorter than usual.”
The woman did not suffer from chronic diseases and died in a short time from metastases of stomach cancer. Her cardiovascular system was relatively healthy. As it turned out, despite more than advanced age, the Dutch long-liver did not suffer from dementia. We can say that van Andel-Schipper died of old age.
“Cancer, of course, hastened her death, but hardly by much,” says the geneticist.
