Members of the Synodal Biblical and Theological Commission of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) said they consider the Vatican’s decision to allow Catholic priests to bless same-sex couples as a “sharp departure from Christian moral teaching.”

“The results of the work of the Synodal Biblical Theological Commission on this issue will be sent for consideration to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’,” it says on website ROC following the meeting that took place on February 20.

In December, the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith released a declaration that allows priests to bless “nonconforming couples,” including same-sex couples. However, the doctrine stated that the blessing should not be similar to a wedding ceremony, since it does not imply the church’s approval of same-sex marriages.

In November 2023, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation banned the activities of the formally non-existent “international LGBT social movement” in the country, recognizing it as extremist. Since December 2022, Russia has had a law banning LGBT propaganda on the Internet, media, books, audiovisual services, cinema and advertising.
