Moscow Poly Rector Vladimir Miklushevsky said that, in his opinion, the proposal of State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin to ban students with a non-core bachelor’s degree from enrolling in a master’s program is not correct. He noted that in order to enter the master’s program, a student must pass entrance exams.
“Now it is difficult to comment on this initiative, since the discussion is still ongoing. This proposal does not seem right to me, since we – the academic community – have always advocated interdisciplinarity. And I think it’s right that a person with a certain bachelor’s education can enter a master’s program in another direction,” Vladimir Miklushevsky said in a conversation with “RIA News”.
Mr. Miklushevsky noted that a student without specialized knowledge will not be able to enter the master’s program, as he needs to pass the relevant exams. “Therefore, in my opinion, there is no need to be afraid of this “non-profile”. And banning students with a non-core bachelor’s degree from enrolling in a master’s program would be the wrong decision,” he said.
The day before, Vyacheslav Volodin suggested abandoning the practice of “training in the master’s program for students who have completed a bachelor’s degree in a completely different profile.” He stressed that this is especially true for students of the humanities who enroll in master’s programs in engineering. Mr. Volodin also suggested that universities ban the training of students in non-core specializations for them.
In the Ministry of Education and Science the idea of Vyacheslav Volodin supported. At the same time, the head of the ministry Dmitry Afanasyev noted that it is worth making exceptions for more universal specialties.
