The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted bill No. 8273, amending the law of Ukraine “On the Protection of Cultural Heritage”. It is noted that the purpose of the bill is to clear the public space of Ukraine from the traces of the Russian imperial and communist totalitarian heritage.
“Specifically, we are talking about monuments that glorify events and personalities associated with the implementation of the Russian imperial policy aimed at subjugating Ukraine and persecuting independence fighters,” the press service of the Verkhovna Rada specified.
Minister of Culture and Information Policy Oleksandr Tkachenko commented on the adoption of the law:
“This will allow state bodies to quickly and in accordance with the law free public space from monuments glorifying the Russian Empire. For example, in Poltava, local authorities did not want to remove monuments to Peter I, citing the lack of legal grounds. Now the local authorities will no longer have such arguments” , he noted.
“I always ask why we need 400 Pushkin streets, some of which still have monuments to the Russian poet? We need to simplify the procedures for clearing Ukrainian public space of Russian markers. Therefore, we developed a bill that became known as AntiPushkin,” the Ukrainian minister added.
