Secretary of the Public Chamber (PC) of Russia Lidiya Mikheeva called Russia’s refusal to impose the death penalty one of the most important achievements in the history of the country. She stressed that the chamber does not plan to discuss the abolition of the moratorium on the death penalty.

“The Public Chamber does not plan to discuss lifting the moratorium on the death penalty. This issue has long been resolved by our legal order. If we do not want to roll back to the times of savagery and barbarism, then we should all stop and think,” Mrs. Mikheeva told TASS.

The fact that the Public Chamber is ready to consider the introduction of the death penalty for terrorism, today, March 26, reported State Duma deputy from United Russia Alexander Spiridonov. Deputy Chairman of the OP Commission on Public Control and Work with Citizens’ Appeals Maxim Grigoriev said that the chamber will discuss the initiative if it is submitted to the State Duma and the parliament sends it to the OP.

Discussions about the possible return of the death penalty in Russia began after the terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall on March 22, which killed 139 people. Three out of five parliamentary factions are in favor of returning the death penalty. State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin emphasized that the decision to introduce the death penalty depends on the Constitutional Court. In June 2022, the chairman of the court Valery Zorkin saidthat if the death penalty is returned, Russia “will turn away from the path of humanization that it has been following in recent decades.”
