The St. Petersburg city court began considering the merits of the claim to recognize the blockade of Leningrad as genocide. At the first meeting, three witnesses should be heard – two expert historians and a resident of besieged Leningrad.
Before the start of the survey, representatives of the prosecutor’s office released the key figures of the blockade: almost 1.1 million people died, and the total damage caused by the hostilities amounted to 35.5 trillion rubles at the current exchange rate.
The prosecutor’s office filed a lawsuit to recognize the blockade as genocide of the Soviet people on September 8. On the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Blockade – the day when it began in 1941.
