Anti-slavery activists sued for publishing someone else’s phone number

The anti-trafficking association was ordered to compensate moral damage to a citizen for disseminating personal information. This decision was taken by the Zamoskvoretsky court of the capital.
As it became known to MK, in July and September 2021, the Alternative movement conducted an investigation into a possible violation of the rights of natives of Indonesia. Both foreign women tried to find a job through some recruiting company. There, the girls’ passports were allegedly taken away and given “for rent” to work in a spa in Sochi. The contract was concluded for a certain period, and if the girl wanted to break it before the end of this period, then under the contract she had to pay a huge fine, something like 100 thousand.
During the investigation, employees of the movement came to one of the employees of the company, a certain Maria. On social networks, on behalf of the fighters against slavery, a post was posted indicating the number of her mobile phone with the comment “The phone number of the representative of Maria’s company. Maybe after the call her conscience will wake up.” These posts were the reason for the lady’s appeal to the court. She considered that the dissemination of such information on the Internet is a violation of her right to privacy of personal data and demanded compensation for non-pecuniary damage. The Zamoskvoretsky court agreed with Maria’s arguments. The judge considered that the amount of 15 thousand rubles would meet the requirements of “proportionality, reasonableness and fairness”. The plaintiff, in a conversation with MK, confirmed that the indicated amount fully coincides with her initial requirements. The lawyer of the movement, in turn, stated that the association was not even notified of the lawsuit – probably, as the organization suggests, due to a change in legal address. After studying the claims and the decision of the court, the organization will decide on the possibility of challenging the verdict of the court.
The “Alternative” movement itself has now suspended its work. The reason is that the head of the association, Oleg Melnikov, and one of their employees went missing during a humanitarian trip to the Kharkiv region of Ukraine. Their fate is still unknown.
