Experts from the Presidential Academy assessed the role of AI in the educational process

Artificial intelligence is rapidly spreading to all areas of human activity. Created on the basis of powerful computers, the ChatGPT neural network brilliantly copes with writing texts, organizing data, and generating photos and videos.

The capabilities of AI were instantly picked up by millions of users around the world, which is why the chatbot began to raise concerns among the scientific community. Will a neural network harm the educational process? Will its widespread use lead to the degradation of students during training? Will artificial intelligence be able to help students get a quality education? The answers to these questions were found in their research by experts of the Presidential Academy, Director of the Federal Institute for Educational Development Natalya Garkusha and senior lecturer of the Department of Foreign Languages of the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences Yulia Gorodova.

The power of artificial intelligence

To appreciate the scale of the ever-evolving ChatGPT, you need to realize that in 2023 the neural network successfully passed the MBA exam. The AI solved many complex problems without problems and was rated good. Also in 2023, with the help of AI, a thesis at a major Russian university was written and successfully defended in less than 24 hours.

One of the first to evaluate the use of ChatGPT for educational purposes was Professor Christian Terwisch at the University of Pennsylvania. According to the scientist, the chatbot copes with basic questions, giving logical explanations. At the same time, the neural network sometimes makes unexpected errors in simple mathematical calculations. However, she corrects herself after receiving a hint from a man. Within two months after the launch, the number of active users of the neural network exceeded 100 million people.

Not surprisingly, the capabilities of the neural network and its wide access to students have caused concern in the academic community. The authors of the article note that the massive use of AI can lead to the likelihood of the emergence of the phenomenon of academic GPT dishonesty – a type of deception when students complete work using a chatbot, but present it as done independently.

Pedagogical capabilities of the neural network

Having studied in detail the capabilities and functions of the chatbot, experts from the Presidential Academy came to the conclusion that a neural network can influence the educational process both negatively and positively.

The use of artificial intelligence can be an effective assistant for both students and teachers. With the help of AI correctly used during the educational process, students can develop criticality, creativity, cognitive interest, motivation to learn, reflexivity and skill development.

In particular, the chatbot generates information from multiple sources and helps students analyze it. A neural network can evaluate and validate data, teach students to draw their own conclusions, and initiate discussions about points of view.

Properly used, the tool allows educators to find innovative solutions based on existing data. For students, AI can serve as an assistant in deepening their knowledge in a specific subject or area. A correctly constructed request will lead to better assimilation of information and will also motivate students to achieve their goals.

The future of global education

“The task of teachers is to train students to use all the possibilities of AI productively and honestly. Recognizing the capabilities and limitations of ChatGPT listed in this study will allow the use of AI effectively for all participants in the educational process,” experts note.

According to scientists, the subsequent restructuring of the educational process using AI is the most important factor in the development of modern education.
