According to the press service of the Land of the Leopard National Park in Primorsky Krai, Pope Francis received the honorary title of Guardian of the Leopard and gave a unique name to one of the Far Eastern leopards living in the forests of the park.
As the representatives of the “Land of the Leopard” specified, the pontiff named the rarest large cat in the world with the symbolic name Martin Fierro.
“I smile at the thought that I became one of the ‘protectors’ of the leopard… I saw a leopard in the photo, very beautiful… Please say hello to ‘my friend’, the leopard Leo 252M. I suggested the name Martin Fierro, this is a mythical literary character of Argentina from… a poem by José Hernandez,” said Pope Francis in his letter to Russia.
