Employees of the Zapovednoe Pribaikalye faced an unusual incident – a light aircraft landed on the ice of Lake Baikal near Olkhon Island. As it turned out, the citizens flying from Novosibirsk planned to dine on the sacred island. As told in the institution, in practice, an uncoordinated “splashdown” on the water area within the boundaries of a specially protected natural area – the national park – happened for the first time.
The descending plane was noticed by inspectors who were patrolling the area. They immediately went to the site of a likely landing to find out why the ship was trying to land on the ice of the lake within the national park.
“The citizens explained that they were coming from Novosibirsk, and they had planned a lunch stop on Olkhon Island. I had to explain that the presence of a vehicle on the ice of the waters of the Maloye More Strait, within the boundaries of the protected area and outside the existing crossing, is a violation of the current legislation. A protocol was drawn up under Art. 8.39 of the Administrative Code. The violators left the borders of the Pribaikalsky National Park at our request immediately after the execution of the relevant documents,”— told Evgeniy Ryzhov, Deputy Head of the Territorial Protection Department of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “Zapovednoe Pribaikalye”.
According to the staff, the appearance of any aircraft can cause serious damage to the nature of Olkhon and its water area, including rare and red-listed representatives of the fauna.
