Nutritionist, cardiologist, candidate of medical sciences Svetlana Pavlichenko spoke about how much sugar can be consumed per day. At the same time, she advised not to replace sugar with its so-called healthy counterparts. Her words lead “Sport Express”.
“Table sugar is a substance made up of one molecule of glucose and one molecule of fructose. When sugar is added during the cooking process, it is called added sugar. It is extremely harmful,” she said.
The expert advised men to consume no more than 36 grams of added sugar per day (about seven teaspoons), women – no more than 25 grams (about five teaspoons). Children can also consume no more than 25 g, and for babies under 3 years old, sugar is not recommended at all.
Pavlichenko stressed that other natural sweeteners that are advertised as “healthy substitutes for sugar” are also made up of glucose and fructose and can be harmful. These are, for example, honey, maple and corn syrup, brown sugar. The nutritionist added that sugar causes a feeling of satiety and a surge of energy, but this feeling is deceptive and is quickly replaced by hunger.
