The Swedish Academy of Sciences was asked whether it was appropriate to award the Nobel Prize to a scientist from the Russian Federation. Earlier it became known that Russian scientist Alexey Ekimov won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

At a press conference dedicated to the announcement of the winners of the prize in chemistry, Secretary General of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences Hans Ellegren was asked what guided the Academy of Sciences in awarding the award, including to a Russian scientist.

When it comes to selecting Nobel Prize winners, the academy “simply follows a procedure for identifying the most important discoveries.” The “most important contributors” to these discoveries are then identified. “Without paying attention to nationality or any other factors,” the Swedish Academy of Sciences emphasized.

This exactly corresponds to the will of Alfred Nobel, who said that the prize should be received by “the most worthy person, regardless of nationality,” recalled the secretary of the Academy of Sciences.
