The Japanese company Nintendo announced on the social network X that it will cease operating its online service for 3DS and Wii U consoles from April 2024. As a result, users will not be able to play online, and Internet ratings will also stop working.
Nintendo said it has no plans to prevent users from downloading previously purchased games or downloading patches for any foreseeable future. SpotPass and Nintendo Badge Arcade will stop working, but StreetPass local connectivity will still work.
Nintendo Wii U was released from 2012 to 2017, and Nintendo 3DS from 2010 to 2020. The Wii U only sold 13 million units, making it one of Nintendo’s least popular consoles. The 3DS sold over 75 million copies, which was a success for Nintendo.
Previously gaming media reported, that Nintendo showed a new console at Gamescom, which should become the successor to the Switch. The alleged Switch 2 will receive 12 GB of RAM, support for ray tracing and DLSS 3.1 from NVIDIA – this could make the device the only modern console to feature Nvidia’s upscaling system.
