RIA Novosti: Scientists continued to study the origin of tiled graves on Lake Baikal

In the steppes of the Transbaikal region, next to the rivers Selenga, Shilka, Onon and Argun, you can see rectangular fences made of high slabs. Local residents call them “wonderful graves.”

The origin of these mysterious structures still remains a mystery. According to legend, a “wonderful shaman” predicted the coming of a “white king” who, in his words, would conquer everyone. However, local rulers did not want to come to terms with this prediction and built these fences as protection.

The first mentions of the burial grounds of Transbaikalia appeared in the 17th-18th centuries. In the 20th century, Soviet archaeologist Grigory Borovko called them “tilers.” As a result of excavations in unexplored mounds, many ancient artifacts were found: weapons, jewelry made of precious metals.

However, the mystery of the origin of these burial grounds remains unsolved, and scientists will continue research in this direction.
