Gender discrimination recorded in venture investments – Kommersant

The British National Alan Turing Institute, which studies data processing technologies and artificial intelligence, has released studywhich states that female-founded AI startups receive far less venture capital investment than male-founded AI startups.

Looking at data from 2012 to 2022, the institute’s researchers noted that 80% of all venture capital investments in AI went to all-male startups. In turn, startups consisting of women received only 0.3% of the total amount of such investments. When female-founded start-ups did secure funding, they received around six times less capital per deal than male entrepreneurs: £1.3 million compared to £8.6 million.

At the same time, the researchers note that the vast majority of venture funds that financed AI startups also consisted of men. Only 5% of funds had approximately equal numbers of men and women. The Institute believes that the publication of these data will draw attention to issues of gender inequality in the field of high technology financing.

“Tackling gender inequality is a key focus for us,” said Institute Professor Helen Margets. “We are working to ensure that project funding is more fair and equitable, which is an important part of how the overall market operates.”
