The new area on the site of the former South Port industrial zone is being built using 95% Russian materials

In the south-east of Moscow, a new district “South Port” is being built on the site of a former industrial zone. During construction, 95% of domestically produced materials are used. It is expected that the new area will become the “third center of the capital” after the historical one and Moscow City. Its area will be more than 600 hectares, which will make the territory one of the largest redevelopment projects in Europe. “Over 340 enterprises in Moscow produce building materials and structures, providing high-quality products to the domestic and foreign markets. Thus, when building new housing in the South Port area, developers use up to 95% of materials produced in the capital’s factories,” said Vladislav Ovchinsky, Minister of the Moscow Government, Head of the Moscow Department of Investment and Industrial Policy, adding that this saves money on procurement and time for transportation, without reducing the quality of future buildings.

For example, to build one of the residential areas, the developer works immediately with 6 large Moscow concrete factories, including Mosbeton and ERKON. According to Alexander Merkulov, Deputy General Director for Development at Level Group, the company began the process of import substitution back in 2022. For almost all building materials, finishing and equipment there are Russian analogues that are not inferior in quality, but compare favorably in price.
