A high alert regime has been introduced in the Murmansk region due to the decision of the Finnish authorities to leave open only one checkpoint on the border with Russia. According to Governor Andrei Chibis, “a number of additional measures are also being introduced to ensure the safety of our residents.”
“The number of foreign citizens wishing to enter a NATO country through our territory is likely to increase manyfold… We are promptly working out all issues with law enforcement agencies in order to prevent violations of law and order,” Mr. Chibis wrote in Telegram based on the results of the regional operational headquarters to coordinate further actions.
The only open checkpoint will remain “Lotta” in the Kola region (“Raya-Jooseppi” on the Finnish side). As the governor noted, there were about 400 people at the Salla checkpoint. Only 50 of them were allowed into Finland over the past 24 hours.
Prime Minister of Finland Petteri Orpo the day before, November 22, announced about the government’s decision to close on the night of November 25 all checkpoints on the border with Russia, except for “Raya-Jooseppi” – the northernmost point. Since November 18, four checkpoints have been closed due to the influx of refugees: Vaalimaa, Nuijamaa, Imatra and Niirala. President of Finland Sauli Niinistö believes an influx of refugees as “the Kremlin’s revenge” for the country’s entry into NATO. Russian Foreign Ministry declared about the readiness of the Russian Federation to help Finland solve problems at the border.
