The Ministry of Education of Russia has created a textbook on the Ukrainian language for elementary school students, a textbook for secondary school students is under development, said TASS First Deputy Minister of Education Alexander Bugaev.
“The manual will appear. For elementary grades, development has been completed. Work in grades 5-9 is also in full swing, therefore, as we said, the relevant materials and teaching aids will be ready. We teach in Russian, but the study of Ukrainian as a mother tongue, as well as other languages of the peoples of the Russian Federation, we will create all the conditions for this,” said Mr. Bugaev.
Ukrainian can be studied in schools in the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions as a native language or as an elective, the deputy minister said. The format of learning the Ukrainian language will be decided in each region separately. According to him, mainly in these subjects of the Russian Federation, education is conducted in Russian.
“We are preparing the textbook that will really reflect all the beauty, all the purity of the traditional Ukrainian language, which was studied in the Soviet period in our best pedagogical traditions,” Mr. Bugaev concluded.
August 4, 2018 Russian President Vladimir Putin signed law on the study of native languages. According to the law, the study of the state language of the Russian Federation – Russian – and the state languages of the national republics becomes an obligatory part of the training programs. At the same time, parents can choose the language that their children will learn as their native language.
On September 30, 2022, the President of the Russian Federation signed an agreement on the accession of the Zaporozhye region, the Lugansk and Donetsk people’s republics, as well as the Kherson region to Russia. At the Russian Foreign Ministry declaredthat the study of foreign languages, including Ukrainian, will not be banned in the new regions. On March 13, the Minister of Education and Science of the Zaporozhye Region, Elena Shapurova reportedthat from the new academic year, the study of the Ukrainian language in the schools of the region will no longer be mandatory. Parents will be able to choose which language their children will learn as their native language – Russian or Ukrainian.
