Kremlin official Dmitry Peskov did not comment on the proposal to suspend the WhatsApp messenger, owned by Meta (recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation, owns the social networks Facebook and Instagram, which are banned in Russia).
“I don’t know the details of this news; it’s better to contact our people’s representatives for clarification,” the press secretary said.
Earlier, the head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Alexander Khinshtein, said that it would be right to reconsider the attitude towards WhatsApp if the application expands its functionality. The deputy clarified that he has no doubt about the anti-Russian nature of the new messenger channels, since it is owned by the extremist organization Meta.
