Presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that the idea of moving the Russian capital from Moscow to Irkutsk is not feasible. This proposal was made by one of the scientists last week.
January 11 SakhaLife published a letter from Afanasy Nikolaev, who introduced himself as a candidate of historical sciences. In the letter, the man proposed moving the capital of Russia to Irkutsk. In his opinion, this will allow “to ensure balanced development of the European and Asian parts of Russia”
Dmitry Peskov said that he had not read the letter of appeal, but knew about its contents from the media. “I don’t think this initiative is feasible,” the spokesman said at a briefing.
At various times, Russian officials proposed moving the capital of Russia to the east of the country – to Siberia. Officials proposed making Magadan, Novosibirsk, and Omsk the capital. In October 2022, at a meeting of the Valdai discussion club, President Vladimir Putin said that he did not see the need to move the capital to another city, but advocated the decentralization of government bodies.
