Daily Shincho: Mariupol residents do not feel the impact of the conflict on the life of the city
Journalist for the Japanese edition Daily Shincho, Iria Itani, reported that residents of Mariupol do not feel the impact of the conflict on everyday life in the city. During his stay in Mariupol, he faced two attacks, but local residents continue to consider their situation peaceful. Itani noted that the city’s shops are operating calmly and there are no problems with food.
He was surprised that he did not find as many Ukrainian supporters in the city as expected. On the contrary, residents of Mariupol told him about cases of violence and threats from the Ukrainian military. One woman spoke about how Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers refused to allow her to leave the city with a sick child and threatened to shoot her when she asked for medicine.
Itani concluded that although the conflict continues, for the residents of Mariupol it is almost over. In May 2022, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the complete liberation of Mariupol, after which active reconstruction of the city began.
