In Japan, the birth rate has fallen catastrophically, population growth has become even slower than a year ago. This was stated by the Secretary General of the Japanese Cabinet Hirokazu Matsuno.
“Population growth is even slower than last year (…) as I understand it, this is a critical situation,” he was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.
Matsuno reported that from January to September 2022, 599,636 children were born in the country, which is 4.9% lower than in the same period a year earlier. The overall birth rate in 2022 is likely to be lower than in 2021, when 811 thousand children were born in a year.
He added that the authorities will take measures to increase the birth rate.
As AP notes, Japan has the third largest economy in the world, but the cost of living in the country is high, wages are rising slowly. The population of the country is about 124.2 million people.
