IOC Vice President Coates: no more than 40 Russians will compete at the Paris Olympics
IOC Vice-President John Coates believes that about 40 Russian athletes will be able to compete at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
On December 8, the IOC announced the admission of Russians to the 2024 Games in an individual neutral status subject to a number of criteria. ROC President Stanislav Pozdnyakov, following the results of the executive committee, stated that in order to participate in the Olympics, Russian athletes “must condemn the SVO and sign documents that could lead to a violation of the legislation of the Russian Federation.”
Russians will not participate in team sports. “Anyone who is trained in Russian military clubs will not go,” Coates added, as quoted by Reuters. In his opinion, “it is obvious that some athletes may refuse to participate due to the fact that they will not represent Russia.” As for specifics, Coates “seems that there may be no more than 40 of them (Russian athletes”).
The Olympic Games will be held in the French capital from July 26 to August 11.
