Vice-President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) John Coates said that 40 Russians will be able to compete as neutral athletes at the Olympic Games in Paris. He noted that he is not sure of the exact number of Russians who will be allowed to participate. Mr. Coates noted that athletes trained in Russian military clubs will not go to the Games.

“I may be wrong, but I think I read something that says there may only be 40,” said John Coates (quoted by Reuters).

Mr. Coates noted that some athletes may refuse to participate in a neutral status because they want to compete for Russia. “The problem is how many of them will be there because they will not participate in any team sports because they will not be able to compete with Russia,” he explained.

In December 2023, the IOC allowed citizens of Russia and Belarus to participate in the Olympic Games. Six Russians and five Belarusians received licenses to participate in the Games. The display of official symbols of Russia and Belarus will be prohibited at the Olympics. In addition, athletes who supported military action in Ukraine are not allowed to participate.
