The government did not support the bill on Combat Veterans Day

Introduced to the State Duma bill, proposing to introduce a new memorial date – Combat Veterans Day. It is proposed to celebrate the date on July 1. The government did not support the initiative, pointing out that the federal law on Military Glory Days already contains the necessary dates related to the participation of citizens in hostilities.
The initiative was introduced by a group of deputies led by Yaroslav Nilov (LDPR). Among the signatories are Dmitry Svishchev (LDPR), Alexey Didenko (LDPR), Vladislav Davankov (“New People”), Anton Tkachev (“New People”) and others. Amendments are proposed to be introduced into the law “On days of military glory and memorable dates of Russia” . The explanatory note to the project states that the need to adopt such a law is related to “recognition of the merits of citizens” who participated in armed conflicts after 1945.
According to the authors of the initiative, today more than 2 million people are combat veterans in Russia. “Legislative consolidation of the Day of Combat Veterans will emphasize the importance of the veterans’ movement in our society and contribute to the further formation of the patriotic consciousness of Russian citizens,” the note says.
It also notes that in some Russian regions, despite the absence of legislation, July 1 is already celebrated as Combat Veterans Day. Exactly which regions we are talking about is not specified.
The government did not support the initiative, citing insufficient arguments for the need for its adoption. The conclusion, signed by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Grigorenko, states that the said law has already established memorial dates “to perpetuate the memory of veterans.” In conclusion, they include “February 23 – Defender of the Fatherland Day”, “February 15 – Day of Remembrance of Russians who performed their official duties outside the Fatherland” and “February 9 – Day of Heroes of the Fatherland”. According to Dmitry Grigorenko, establishing a new date “carries the risk of devaluation” of already established days of military glory.
Similar initiatives have already been submitted to the State Duma twice. December 27, 2023 project on celebrating July 1, Combat Veterans Day contributed to the State Duma Tula Regional Duma. On June 30, 2022, such a proposal was introduced LDPR deputies led by Leonid Slutsky.
