A subvariant of the strain of coronavirus “omicron” XBB.1.5 (“kraken”) was first discovered in Russia. This was reported press office Rospotrebnadzor. A case of infection was recorded in the Penza region.
As specified in the department, at the moment a wide range of varieties of the Omicron strain has been established in Russia, but the BA.5 line remains dominant. From the message of the press service, it follows that the incidence of Russians with the delta variant dominated in the second half of 2021 and was detected in isolated cases in the fall of 2022. Rospotrebnadzor has not recorded any other strains in recent months.
“The laboratories of Rospotrebnadzor and other departments continue to constantly monitor the circulation of coronavirus variants in the Russian Federation and a number of neighboring states with the uploading of genomic data into the national database VGARus,” the report says.
Currently, 226 thousand genome sequences are located in the VGARus database. In total, over 150 organizations are connected to the system that conduct sequencing of coronavirus genomes, the department explained.
The XBB.1.5 variant was first recorded in October in the United States. In addition, the “kraken” is actively spreading in the UK and other European countries. Experts note that this is the most transmissible and contagious variant of COVID-19 among all existing ones. Nevertheless, Russian scientists and epidemiologists believe that the Kraken will not be able to turn the tide of the post-pandemic.
