The Southern District Military Court sentenced each of the five residents of Crimea to 13 years in prison for participating in the activities of a cell of the Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami organization banned in the Russian Federation for terrorism.

The investigation found that the convicts joined it in 2016 and were preparing for a violent seizure of power. The men studied the organization’s ideology, kept specialized literature at home, and regularly promoted the activities of Hizb ut-Tahrir.

The representative of the court said that the first two years of convicts will serve in prison. They will spend the rest of their term in a strict regime penal colony.

The verdict has not entered into force yet.
