Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko announced the readiness of senators to support the law on raising the upper limit of the draft age to 30 years. In her opinion, the draft law on establishing the limits of the draft age for military service should not cause excessive public outcry. Today, July 25, the State Duma intends to consider the relevant draft law in the second and third readings.
“It seems to me that if this law is adopted in this format, then, in my opinion, the senators will support it. Although in our country each senator votes at his own discretion, at his own choice, after consultations, say, with his region,” Ms. Matvienko said at a press conference (quoted by TASS).
Valentina Matvienko believes that there are no reasons for “excessive resonance around this law”. She noted that regardless of the limits of the draft age, the term of service does not change. At the same time, according to her, the time period during which a citizen can fulfill his civic duty in accordance with the constitution is being extended.
“This gives more opportunities in cases where there is a proven need, at the most convenient time for a person, based on his life circumstances, to serve in the army,” Ms. Matvienko added.
According to the amendments, the upper limit of conscription will be increased from 27 to 30 years, while the lower limit will remain the same – from 18 years. Initially, it was planned to increase it to 21 years. Heads of two committees of the Federation Council Viktor Bondarev and Andrey Klishas did not support maintaining the lower limit of the military age. Mr. Bondarev believes that men should be allowed to join the army at the age of 18, but on a voluntary basis.
