Russia is being hit by a triple epidemic – coronavirus, influenza and ARVI. Following doctors, employers noticed it; employees get sick more often, and this already leads to losses. Although COVID-19, with rare exceptions, is not so severe. The flu virus is much more dangerous this season. And the carelessness of some workers who are in no hurry to isolate themselves. How is the epidemic progressing? And who is already suffering losses? Ivan Koryakin talks about this.
Even during the pandemic, experts said: COVID-19 will become a seasonal disease. And so it happened. Someone received a test with a positive result for the first time, and Muscovite Yana recalled long-forgotten feelings: “I felt bad in one day. In the morning I woke up with a sore throat, and in the evening I fell ill with a temperature of 39.3. The next day, a doctor arrived, took tests for coronavirus and flu, and issued me a sick leave. I received a call from the clinic and was informed that I had tested positive for COVID-19. They didn’t prescribe any medications, they extended the sick leave for two days.”
The seasonal increase in incidence does not surprise either employers or doctors. Another thing is that in 2023 the epidemiological situation offers Russians a choice: flu or coronavirus. For the first time since the pandemic, the two waves have united. Moreover, COVID-19 is no longer what it used to be.
More often it proceeds like a typical ARVI, says Elena Fedorova, a general practitioner at the MedSwiss clinic: “The coronavirus has acquired the signs of a not very severe ARVI. Complex cases exist, but they are much smaller. Sometimes hospitalization is required. As for the flu, it is still severe, long lasting, with classic symptoms and asthenic syndrome.”
Over the past week, the incidence of COVID-19 in Russia has increased by almost 10%. But in some regions – one and a half times. For example, in St. Petersburg. And the owner of the Helvetia Hotel, Yunis Teymurkhanly, felt this: “There is a real epidemic among the staff, because either the children get sick and the parents take sick leave, or the workers themselves. The most unpleasant thing is that we feel this rise in morbidity among our guests. Bookings began to be canceled precisely because of illness. Some people are already giving up the pre-New Year period because they are afraid of complications.”
In Moscow, Rospotrebnadzor called for wearing masks in public places – another greeting from the past. Although the situation is far from the worst months. Employers talk about a maximum of 10% of cases. But the main thing is that they return to duty much faster, notes the founder of the Orange Fitness and City Fitness chains Anastasia Yusina: “I was sick last week. The first thing I did was take a coronavirus test. There are many people who are sick, but they recover fairly quickly. Maybe this is due to the fact that we work in the healthy lifestyle industry, our people are more trained and more resistant.”
Tests for coronavirus are also sold in pharmacies; it is not necessary to go to a laboratory or clinic. This helps out those who are not ready to go on sick leave, hoping to rest at home if the employer does not mind. Deputy Chairman of Lanta Bank Irina Rys herself found herself in such a situation and is ready to meet her employees halfway: “Even though I’m not in a voice right now, for the sake of one event I had to take a PCR test. It’s not Covid.
We understand that if a person needs to lie down for just a few hours, he goes home early and then returns cheerfully the next day. It’s better to be safe than to start the disease and take a long time to treat complications.”
In Russia, more than 1 million people have already consulted doctors with symptoms of ARVI. And it’s impossible to count how many people suffer from colds on their feet. Few people are ready to fall out of the working rhythm at the end of the year – there are too many plans. But viruses have them too.
