“The dot just didn’t print”: the graduate told how she achieved 100 points after the appeal

Katya’s example can inspire many to seek justice at all costs. The girl received her highest score – a hundred – due to the fact that she did not agree with the result of the Unified State Examination in the Russian language and proved her impeccable knowledge of this subject.

A graduate of gymnasium No. 11 Dubna has long been fond of Russian and literature, and also studies English in depth. She participated in many school competitions, went to the region of the All-Russian Olympiad for schoolchildren in Russian language and literature, and was even a winner in them. She participated in the open regional Olympiad of the University “Dubna” in Russian and English, winning third place in both Olympiads. And she was absolutely confident in her abilities in these subjects!

Katya passed four exams – Russian, basic mathematics, social studies and English (she wants to become an English teacher).

Having learned about 97 points in the Russian language, which she passed first, the girl filed an appeal. In basic mathematics, she has an almost maximum score, that is, a five. In social studies – 90 points, but the graduate believes that in this subject she also “lowered her points for nothing.” And in English scores are still unknown.

As Katya told MK, after the Russian, she was going to appeal also in social studies. “But then I decided that I didn’t want to waste my nerves on this anymore. And she dropped her appeal,” she said.

– How was the exam in Russian and what was the reaction to the scores?

– I have been preparing for Russian since the tenth grade with a tutor. I wrote a lot of essays, which was the most difficult, and a few days before the exam, I solved 14 test options. I was sure of the maximum result at the beginning of the 11th grade.

When I came to the exam, my option was much easier than many of those that I solved – it seemed to me. Regarding the composition, as the teachers later told me, it was the most difficult composition, but due to, as I think, my preparation, it seemed to me quite simple. I left the exam with the confidence that I did everything to the maximum, but in order not to really “star”, I admitted that there could be one or two mistakes.

When the results came in, I saw 97 points.

Of course, there was joy, but I was ready for this joy. Then I looked where I was deducted a point, and saw that in the essay for the eighth criterion, which was associated with punctuation. I wrote to my tutor, she advised not to appeal, because you can still lose. Many dissuaded me – they did not believe that everything would work out, and that I would at least stay with the same number of points.

– What did your parents say?

– Dad was pleased with my result. He said: don’t get on your nerves! But my mother told me: “If you feel in your heart that you need to file an appeal, then file it.” And I was just sure that I wrote everything correctly. My Russian teacher and the director of the gymnasium also supported me, and together we filed an appeal. When we were preparing for it, we analyzed everything very meticulously, tried to calculate what the inspectors could get to the bottom of.

On the eve of the appeal, which took place on June 22, Katya was not at all worried, she decided for herself: let it be as it is.

– I was, in principle, satisfied with my score. But I wanted to prove to myself and to everyone that I wrote everything correctly … I went to the appeal and knew that everything would work out … I didn’t even have time to start my speech, as a member of the commission says: “We apologize to you, it was our mistake. We deducted this point for you because a dot was simply not printed on the form. And I have uppercase and lowercase letters very often merge. And it was just such a moment … They added a score for this criterion, and it turned out that I had the maximum for the essay.

– What advice would you give to those who are dissatisfied with their scores?

– If a person is sure that he is right, then you need to go and try. Very rarely there are cases when points are removed. Therefore, even if you stay on the same points, then there is nothing to worry about. And if there is at least some chance that you can improve your result – and suddenly it will be some kind of oversight of the inspectors, as in my case – then you should definitely try.

Despite her brilliant scores, the girl will enroll in paid education at the University of Dubna, as a translator.

… The second story of triumph – a graduate of one of the lyceums of St. Petersburg, Ilya Dubinin, on appeal proved that there were two solutions in the USE task No. 29, which is part of the second block. And with the help of the appeal, he was able to improve his result from 95 to 99 points.

His decision was initially considered incorrect. As the graduate said, it was only at the very beginning of the appeal that the members of the commission tried to refute his answer. Then, after carefully looking at his decision for another 5-7 minutes, the experts raised their points. The appeal ended in victory. Moreover, Ilya wanted to achieve justice purely out of principle – he would not even need 99 points in chemistry, since the university would already accept him “with open arms” thanks to victories in school competitions.

However, experts remind that filing an appeal is always a risk.

“If there are dubious places in your work for which a point was given, yes, points can be removed,” says Irina Dubrovskaya, an expert on the Unified State Examination in history and social studies. – If you are sure that there is nothing to shoot – apply.

Tune in to long evidence, arguments with an expert are not worth it. If there are reasons, the expert himself will find what you can add a point for. And you may not even participate in the procedure (there is such an opportunity for the appellant). Try to remember the task as accurately as possible, and reread your answer, compare it with the standard (on the Web, the collective mind has already restored the options that were on the exam). It must be remembered that an expert is a specialist who knows his field brilliantly, so do not try to confuse him, to show that there is something that does not exist. Be kind. You seek help from a specialist who can help you correct an unfair assessment.
